Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who are Coastal Jewel Bloodstock?
A. Set-up by Andrew Crabb at the end of 1998, we are a complete bloodstock services company, specialising in, but not limited to, French-bred race-horses.

Q. And what do you do, exactly?
A. We help our clients enjoy a hassle-free (and thus pleasurable) experience in buying and/or breeding their race horses. We specialise in finding “improvers” (out of French claiming races) to run in handicaps or send hurdling (in the UK). We also attend all the major European sales, and offer all the normal bloodstock sevices. This link should answer all your questions.

Q. OK, about French horses: Why are they so much more mature than those in the UK?
A. What utter nonsense! This idea arose because better horses are sent jumping in France due to the higher prize money. Another reason may be, that for the same outlay, it is possible to buy a much higher class jump recruit (out of a flat claiming race, for example) than in the UK.

Q. Your charges seem rather high - am I getting value for money?
A. Yes! Firstly look at our bloodstock purchase prices - almost every other agent charges 5% regardless of the price of the horse. We only charge 5% on the first €30000 (Euros), declining thereafter (subject to the work involved). With regard to management charges of 15%, we often manage to get the base price reduced by more than this because of the number of horses we have. This is in addition to the fact that we use the best value stud farms and trainers to start with. Similarly, with the booking of stallions we can often negotiate the covering price down by more than the 5% you have to pay us! Finally, you do not pay VAT or TVA on top of our charges. See our pricing policy for further information.
